Theme Goal
Trough participating in the experiences provided by this theme, the children may learn:
- Parts of an apple.
- Preparation of apples for eating.
- Apple tastes.
- Texture, size, and colors of apples.
- The origin of an apple.
Concepts for the Children to Learn
- An apple is fruit.
- An apple has five parts.
- Apple grow on trees.
- A group of apple trees is an orchard.
- Bread, butter, cakes, pies, pudding, appleasauce, dumplings, butter, and jelly can be prepared from apples.
- Some apples are sweet; others are sour.
- Apple can be green, yellow, or red.
- Apples can be hard or soft.
- Apples can be large or soft.
- Seeds from an apple can grow into a tree.
Vocabulary
- Apple__a fruit that is grown on a tree.
- Texture__how something feels.
- Apple blossom__a flower on the apple tree.
- Apple butter__a spread for bread made from apples.
Bulletin Board
The purpose of this bulletin board is to develop the mathematical skill of sets, as well as identify written numerals. Construct red apples. The number will depend upon the developmental level of the children. Laminate the apples. Collect containers for baskets, such us large cottage cheese or pint berry containers. Cover the containers with papers necessary. Affix numerals on baskets, beginning with the numeral 1. Staple the baskets to the bulletin board. The object is for the children to place the appropriate number of apples in each basket.
Sensory
- Cut different varieties of apples for a tasting party. This activity can easily be extended. On another day provide the children applesauce, apple pie, apple juice, or apple cider to tasting during snack or lunch.
- Place several different kinds of seeds on the sensory table. In addition, to create interest provide scoops, bowls, and botles to fill.
Math
- Cat apple shapes of various size from construction paper. Let the children sequence the shapes from smallest to largest.
- Place a scale and various-sized apples on the math table. The children can experiment by weighing the apples.
Science
Solar Baked Apple Slices.
Materials: 4 styrofoam cups black paper scissors masking tape apple knife plastic wrap rubber bands white paper foil newspaper.
Line 2 cups with black paper. Place to equal sized slices of apple inside each cup. Cover with plastic wrap held by rubber band. With paper and tape make a cone. Place one apple cup into a cone. Place one apple cup into it. Cover the inside of another paper cone with aluminum foil and place second apple cup into it. Place both in a sunny window facing the sun on crumpled newspaper. Which one cooks faster? The apple baked in the aluminum foil.
